i don't know what insight i really have on the topic. 'hacking' is kind of a loaded word and means different things in different contexts to different people. in the context of the link, 'hacking' refers to pretty much any programming involving the kernel. you almost never hear it refered to as 'kernel programming'; there seems to be a notion that even pretty straightforward programming tasks are so tricky in kernel context that it should be refered to as 'hacking'. my experience in the area is that i spent about one semester taking the linux kernel apart, doing horrible things to it, and trying to put it back together again.
