thraxil.org:

give me something to break

by anders pearson Wed 07 Nov 2001 01:34:12

it's not just a new design. in fact, the design is just temporary. it <em>is</em> a new backend. with lots of new features. still not completed but there should be enough to play with for now. on to the new features: <strong>user accounts</strong>: if you login you can change all kinds of things. eventually (once i add some more themes) you can change the theme of the site. login, go to your user page click 'edit your settings' and play with stuff. if you had an account before, it'll be the same username/password you had. if you've posted a comment before, check the list of <a href="users.pl">users</a> and see if you're on there. for the next few days at least your password is the same as your username. change it. any accounts that haven't changed their password in the next week i'll set to garbage and you'll have to contact me if you want to re-activate that username. if you're not listed there, feel free to create yourself a new account. you have to be logged in to post comments so make yourself an account if you want to participate. <strong>diaries</strong>: you've probably noticed mention of "diaries" around here too. i've added a little diary feature that you can use if you like (i added it mostly because i want a place to put things that are too mundane for thraxil but still trying to keep myself in the habit of writing on a daily basis). the "edit diary template directory" link on your user page is another cool related feature. it lets you edit the template files and even add stuff to your own directory so you can change the look and feel of your diary. i'll post some documentation for the format of the template files later. <strong>image upload</strong>: replaced "sketches" with a more general purpose "images" section. so feel free to post other stuff there besides just drawings (no pr0n or copyrighted stuff that will get me in trouble though or i <em>will</em> take the toy away). and now you can upload images to thraxil. it will automagically resize and thumbnail them so you don't have to worry about that anymore (only handles jpgs, gifs, and pngs for now). <strong>keywords</strong>: the categories for bookmarks have been changed to a keywords system for maximum flexibility. in addition, you can mark any other post with keywords too to make things more searchable. lots of other little changes too that probably are obvious that i don't need to explain them. threaded discussions on the comments, preview and edit capabilities on posts, handy little menu of recent comments and recent diary entries at the top, limited ability to fix unclosed tags. still to come: search, archives, complete editting (for images and bookmarks too), better diary management, more themes, documentation, and (don't worry) a reworked markov.

dig it. Now everyone knows I am in GMT8 when I post. Can't wait for the new themes. Although black and red does a have a spiffy sort of flavor to it.
damn your fast, kam. watch out for the timezone stuff. i haven't had a chance to fix it yet but postgres treats them backwards for some reason: GMT8 = GMT - 8 hours and GMT-8 = GMT + 8 hours. don't ask me. eventually, the timezone select will show the current time in each zone so you'll be able to pick your timezone just by selecting the one with the correct time.
oh yes, and there is also a limited sort of "web of trust" deal now. if you are authorized to post on the main page, you can now authorize other users. just go to their user page and click the link. as a rule of thumb though, people should not be authorized lightly. only authorize someone after they've hung out on the site a bit and participated enough that you can tell they have a feel for what thraxil is about and will contribute more to the community than just noise.
This is all too big and fast and scary. I was just telling my pod that he should try downloading and installing a version of this stuff (I can't figure out what it is really called... Ander's Brain?) for his project. But now... I think I'm hyperventilating. It is just scary. I'm confused. I've logged in and can't get up. That is, it is quite and very wonderful.
no worries, in the meantime i'll just neg 8 my timezone choice. oh, as you probably noticed, bug in the comment test bubble. Get come coffee and get crackin' cowboy.
Hmmm....it might make things a little easier if there was a direct link from the diary back to the main thraxil page. Just my 2 cents. It looks good, even if it's temporary.
since you can edit the diary template, you're welcome to add a link yourself. i probably will add it to the default diary template though. just hurrying to get things out the door.
anders, I must commend you on a job well done. you've coded one hell of a web site. Is the source going to be released when you finish this initial new release? I'm really interested to see what you did.
thanks. i plan on releasing the new source once i get the rest of the features added, some additional paranoid security checks implemented and generally clean things up (there are still ugly hard-coded paths and stuff all over the place that would make it hard for someone else to reuse the code).
think i fixed the comment threading/nesting bug with IE. (well, worked around an IE bug to be more specific) maybe someday they'll fix IE's broken CSS...

I'm having trouble with everything coming together. 1) took forever to find out where my uploaded picture was (making the image name a hotlink would help) 2) Very hard to get to see the results of the template changes you've made. Perhaps a button somewhere. 3) This is flummoxingly amazing, you know that right Anders?
yeah, emile asked about that too. once i have a chance to write some more documentation, things should be easier. (if anyone else hasn't figured it out, anything you upload to your diary template directory (like foo.gif) will be in users/&lt;your username&gt;/foo.gif) my main concern was to get something usable up as quickly as possible. i have this weekend free so i'll probably make a lot of usability improvements and fix loose ends.
something ate the bookmarks. And perhaps we need a 'freak out anders with commments' button. ;-) I'm in love with this version.
i'm working on the site live without a net. if something is broken, wait an hour before you get too worried. i've got the server set up so that whenever there is a significant error, it emails me the diagnostic info so i can fix it as quickly as possible.
Flying without your jockstrap? Cool. I knew NewYorkers were a wild lot, but this? I was just feeling maternal... worried you didn't notice the bork. Have fun...
