ding dong

the big head honcho of all the different new media / learning initiatives at Columbia is leaving to go be president of Arizona State. so tonight we had a big fancy dinner to say goodbye. really expensive catering, excellent food and an open bar.
afterwards one of my coworkers mentioned that he was going to a bar on 105th and columbus ave called 'ding dong' that he said was a punk bar and invited a few of us to come along. so we did and sure enough, a mere two blocks from my apartment is a little hole-in-the-wall type place (although it's actually fairly spacious on the inside) that plays punk rock, and has walls covered with graffiti and U.K. Subs, Exploited, and Motörhead posters.
so i'm ecstatic about the discovery but i must hang my head in shame for living here so long and never noticing it (to be fair, it isn't exactly very distinctive from the outside).

shame shame shame...a place arguably closer and arguably cooler (ensign, raise shields to full power) than the underground. i guess you would never think to go in the direction of columbus with broadway in the other...unless you were spelling out something meaningful in your daily meanderings.anders pearson - Thu 30 May 2002 22:26:05
i feel slightly validated after talking with gerard. he lives next door to me and has lived there for over two years and he didn't know of its existence either.anders pearson - Thu 30 May 2002 22:25:05
i'm so set in my ways. whenever i leave my apartment i usually just turn north to walk to campus or i head over to broadway. i always just figured that going over to columbus would just turn more and more into residential stuff with maybe a couple bodegas but nothing terribly interesting. but if it hadn't been pointed out to me, i could have walked by it every day and never known it was a punk bar. the outside is pretty nondescript.
