i would actually suggest taking a look at the new <a href="http://www.apple.com/ibook/">iBook</a>'s. a 500MHz G3 is plenty of speed for web/email/word processing, it's rugged, it looks nice, it's only 4.9 pounds, and it's cheap. they finally put a video out jack on the iBook too so now you can actually use it with a projector. i'd suggest getting the DVD/CD-RW combo drive and maxing out the RAM. and of course, you should put OS X on it.
If it's just email and word processing you can find a lot of 3 year old laptops on ebay for real cheap now. They should be fine for whatever she needs.
