Details inside of my journey in the shadow of the light from a black sun.

Indeed, last night Emile and I went to see the almighty god's of goth, Type O Negative. God what a show. This was my second time seeing them and I must admit I was not disappointed. Type O is not one of those bands whose music is incredible to hear live, nor are they a band that will carry a groove and sway your spirit. No, while both of those experiences I do enjoy from a live band, it is not what one should expect from an encounter with Type O. Type O brings you a whole different experience where the quality of the music has no meaning, where the intention of the music and the story behind it are carried to you in full effect. It's altogether impressive. And good god is Peter Steele huge. I knew he was big, and he even looked big last fall when I saw them the first time. However this time it was painfully clear when an average sized stagehand ran up beside him to hand him a towel. Standing nearly shoulder to shoulder with average, Peter looked like a god. His shoulders were half again as wide as this guy and he was over a head taller. His jagged face with that savage jawline and flat forehead, combined with that impossible baritone will forever imprint in my mind the image of a male god. The embodiment of everything that is powerful about a man. mmmmmm. And god could he scream. Roar is more like it. While he was continually distracted by random flying things and every comment tossed his way there were still those moments where he completely immersed himself in the music and the outcome was stunning. And of course, as usual, they covered ozzy. My ears will be ringing for a week, my body was spent at the end of the night. Due to a shoulder injury three weeks ago I had to restrain myself from diving headlong into the mosh pit, but I did manage to get on the edge of it for a while, long enough to get hit a few times. Emile and I came to the conclusion that when your a massive neanderthal like me you go into a mosh pit not to hit other people (I can do this whenever I want), but to get hit alot (because no one ever hits me outside of a mosh pit since they are afraid I will throw their hapless ass around). Still it was difficult to hold back. Regardless for many of the songs I'm glad that I wasn't in the pit ... a lot of Type O isn't about rage or angst, but rather pain and sorrow. At any rate it was a dirty, filthy, loud, distorted, and not so good sounding concert. That was absolutely perfect for Type O Negative. Listen to the albums if you want to hear the clear, precise, beautiful music that these boys can make. Go to the concert if you want the pure authenticity of the savage beauty that is Type O Negative.
