I've read the book five times, so I don't really have a choice in the matter. I do suggest reading the book first, however. Movies take you on a journey as long as you sit and watch them. Books take more effort...you actually have to sit down and actively read. I've found that it's easier to make that effort when I haven't known what was going to happen. Seeing the movie first would take all the fun out of the surprises that Fellowship has in store for the reader. I don't think the trip through Moria (Khazad-dûm) wouldn't be half as exciting if you knew what was going to happen. That's one of the best parts of LOTR.
So read the book...read all of them. You'll be much happier in the long run.
