I’m just not in the mood to hear this sort of thing: Cross caste teenage lovers hanged to death in India. Having a bad relationship summer I guess. It is enough trouble to find someone in the first place and get them to stick around, and not run off after some convolutions of their own fear and ego, let alone having the family of the bride come by with a noose. I may have a Harijan soul, but it gets kicked around like a Shudra one (Caste System).

So I went to GenCon for a day this Saturday. For those of you who don’t know what it is, GenCon is a massive 4 day convention for geeks of all kinds who like sci-fi/fantasy.
<p>This was my first GenCon, and I’d have to say that it is an utter success for 2 reasons:</p>
<p>1. I attended with 12 friends from college whom I haven’t seen in a long time.</p>
<p>2. I’m an utter cynic when it comes to things like this. Gencon can be a ton of fun if you don’t take it seriously.</p>
<p>Things of interest that I saw: <br />
guy in well done Predator costume<br />
more Stormtroopers than the Imperial Navy<br />
girl dressed up like Rimmer<br />
lots of chainmail bikinis on models<br />
chainmail dress with large woven links worn by a woman with nothing else on<br />
WotC getting shit on and beaten by the smaller gaming companies<br />
making of footage of Episode 2</p>
<p>The guy that did the presentation for Episode 2 was an utter dick. Lucas studios has totally bought into their own hype. On the plus side, we’re gonna get to see Yoda kick some ass, and Samuel L. Jackson’s gonna use a lightsaber.</p>
<p>Afterwords I went to the White Wolf party where Justin Achilli, the Vampire developer, was spinning up a storm, and danced the night away.</p>

this one ought to pose a nice quandary for the environmentalists: pigs are being genetically engineered to pollute less. is genetic engineering of food more or less evil than polluting the lakes?
<p>of course, people could just stop eating pigs…</p>

one of the most annoying shows on TV lately is “Crossing Over” with John Edward on the Sci-fi channel. i really don’t understand why it’s so popular. are people really willing to believe anything they see on tv? apparently so.
<p>here’s an <a href="http://www.skeptic.com/newsworthy13.html">excellent article</a> explaining his technique.</p>

the code red worm is still running rampant. the patch has been out for months. code red has been all over the news for weeks. there are still admins who haven’t patched up their machines.
<p>code red itself is pretty stupid, but i’m getting worried about the ability of the internet to fight back against these things. with a few minor changes, code red could really do some serious damage. currently, it’s blatantly obvious if your machine has been comprimised since it leaves a nice “hacked by chinese” defacement on the webserver. if there are <a href="http://www.caida.org/analysis/security/code-red/">hundreds of thousands of machines</a> whose admins aren’t paying close enough attention to notice something that obvious, i can only imagine what would happen if code red had been written to just infect and spread without defacing. </p>
<p>i’ve seen over 200 infection attempts in the logs for this server (Apache, so it’s not vulnerable) in just the last few days. </p>
<p>maybe people should just stay off the internet until they’re responsible enough to not screw it up.</p>

yesterday i got my autographed copy of Joel Spolsky’s new book User Interface Design for Programmers. the whole book is available online but i payed for a dead-tree copy from Joel because i like to support authors who make their writing available for free.
<p>i particularly like to support them when the writing is <em>good</em>. Joel’s book is definately good. </p>
<p>the book is programming language and platform independant; it just describes what it takes to make a program that people will enjoy using. it isn’t really written as a reference book; you can pick it up and read it cover to cover in one sitting. </p>

this comment on plastic almost resulted in an embarassing loss of bladder control on my part.
